In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
