Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The narrative starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
