The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
