Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to victory and earning best player.

A month later, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
