NY Introduces Online Platform for Public to Share Immigration Footage After Detentions of 4 US Citizens
New York state attorney general has introduced a recent online portal encouraging locals to provide images and footage of federal immigration enforcement throughout New York. This move follows a shortly after a major enforcement action shook NYC's Chinatown, triggering mass outcry.
US Citizens Held During ICE Operation
A congressional representative announced during a news conference that four citizens were detained and detained for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Rallies erupted in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Each citizen deserves to exist without intimidation," state officials declared in a announcement.
"If you witnessed and recorded ICE activity yesterday, I urge you to submit that evidence with the authorities. We are committed to assessing these accounts and evaluating any legal breaches."
Portal Features
The form offers fields to upload visual evidence of the raid, along with a section to note where it occurred. Prior to sending, submitters must tick a option that states that "the attorney general may use any evidence provided in a official report, including in a lawsuit or public report."
Details of the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say involved dozens of federal agents, occurred in a well-known neighborhood of the city where imitation products and other goods are sold daily en masse – frequently to tourists.
Footage of the operation reveal several masked and armed officers securing and holding a man, and pushing back bystanders. Masses of residents trailed the personnel through the streets. An armored military vehicle was noticed moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Official Reactions
During a midweek briefing held with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be detained for no reason." He clarified the citizens were let go on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman remarked. "This constitutes a militarized effort to create conflict. It is purely a pretext to generate turmoil for this administration to deploy the military to prevent unrest that they themselves caused."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the immigration operation quickly spread – each of the mayoral candidates denounced the operation, as did the state leader.
"Once again, the federal government chooses heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, not safety. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate stated.
NYC advocacy organizations spoke out too.
"Federal officers descended on the neighborhood with armored transports, covered personnel and protective equipment to focus on small merchants attempting to earn income. This operation had nothing to do with citizen protection and everything to do with frightening communities and areas," remarked the president of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE Policies
Agency rules forbids the arrest of American nationals and the agency has said it does not arrest or detain American nationals. Yet, external research has discovered that more than 170 American nationals have been taken illegally by ICE since the start of the present government.
Ongoing Trend
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in NY and across the US recently.
A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an housing center of the existing leadership. Demonstrations against immigration enforcement are widespread along with allegations of force and cruel conditions.
Recently, a letter provided by civil rights groups alleged healthcare failures of expectant mothers in government custody.
