Larian Studios Details Its Application of Machine Learning for Next Project
The developer behind acclaimed role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just unveiled its next major project, sparking a wave of anticipation within the gaming community. However, follow-up comments from the company's lead designer have brought nuance to the discussion, touching on the studio's approach toward machine learning.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a recent message, the studio's founder detailed that the developer is employing machine learning for specific supporting functions. These involve developing PowerPoint slides, generating initial artistic references, and writing temporary copy.
Notably, Vincke emphasized that the final assets in the game will be authored entirely by actual artists. "Our team is writing every line manually," he said.
Larian is actively increasing our roster of storytellers and are actively forming narrative groups.
Given that this area is being particularly mentioned — we presently have over twenty visual developers and have positions available for more artists.
Everything we do is supplementary and aimed at letting our team spend additional energy on the creative process.
Any AI system applied correctly is a boost to a artist's workflow, not a replacement for their talent.
Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path
The revelation of using AI at first sparked unease among some the fanbase. In response, Vincke offered additional clarification on online platforms.
"We use these tools to explore references, similar to we use search engines and art books," he explained. "During the conceptual brainstorming phase we use it as a rough outline for structure which we then replace with original illustrations."
He continued, "Larian brings on creatives for their inherent skill, not for their ability to execute what a machine suggests."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had in the past detailed the company's practical strategy to this technology, defining its use into three main areas:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: Areas like polishing mocap data, voice editing, and Larian-specific work like retargeting animations.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to speedily create rough models of scenarios to validate concepts prior to expensive development.
- Experimental Frontiers: Exploring how AI could one day create new forms of gameplay, specifically in simulating player-driven narratives in a detailed game universe.
He explicitly stated that central narrative areas — such as writing — are are absolutely not fields where the studio is replacing human input. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these precise positions.
"Our studio is not shipping a game with AI-generated content, nor looking at cutting teams to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
