Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
