Israeli citizens observe second remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace negotiations proceed
Citizens have come together around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The government authorities delayed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.

A prominent delegate involved in the talks revealed that an late session of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.
The official said the day's discussions finished without significant progress, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the arrangement.
He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
