A popular South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation struggling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Police said the 40-year-old media personality was accosted by three individuals, one of whom began shooting at him before running away.

The purpose behind the incident remains unclear and no one has been arrested are in custody, as per the official statement.

Details of the Attack

Police revealed that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a premises in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the building supervising the setup of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unidentified individuals, according to reports.

"The report indicates the victim was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," authorities said.

CCTV footage showed a suspect with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a security uniform shooting on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries across the street.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the assault.

Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were recovered from the scene.

Call for Public Assistance

Police have appealed members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the shooting, and police have been tracking them to find their location," remarked an authority figure.

Outpouring of Grief

His family member, a close relative, stated the family was struggling to understand the tragedy.

"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
"Everyone understood he was a voice for many people. He addressed issues courageously about topics not many people were ready to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the community to not sharing explicit content from the incident, saying this was an incredibly difficult time, especially for Stock's young family.

Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that aired on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.
