The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
