"When are you chatting with Haim?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: The sender also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. A host of high-profile fans have openly petitioned for the role.

It's clear a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the best bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their videos often depict them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

Award Recognition

The band have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record was born from a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words track endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That developed toughness called for a new sound – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

One man ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global following.

However the sister act will always be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
